Who am I?

I work as a Technical Support Analyst supporting various Cray systems.

My work interests are -

  • Compilers and program optimization techniques.
  • Teaching (Optimization, MPP Programming and Korn shell).
  • Web page development. I use this page as my sandpit to play in so please let me know of any problems.
  • Network support.
  • Systems support.

My personal interests are -

  • Astronomy (but not a practical observer any more).
    I have written JavaScript for an astronomical ephemeris, you can find a copy on my internet pages.
  • Preservation of the landscape and our historical buildings.
    I'm a member of the Friends of the Lake District and of the National Trust.
  • Antique glass (and the wines that go in them!).

My life history is -

  • Born in Norfolk (Outwell), raised in Lincolnshire (Sleaford) and Merseyside (Runcorn).
  • 1966-79 - University of Manchester.

    1966 to 1969 BSc Physics
    1969 to 1970 Msc Radio Astronomy at Jodrell Bank.
    1970 to 1973 Programming and preliminary scientific analysis for an experiment on the Ariel 4 satellite. Published Proceedings of the Royal Society A. 343, 227-240 (1975), Walsh, Hayes & Harrison.
    1973 to 1979 Regional Computer Centre (now Manchester Computing). First doing user support then becoming a compiler specialist.

  • 1979-84 - Control Data Ltd.

    1979 to 1980 Developing a PDP cross-assembler and APL code for a new customer site.
    1980 to 1984 Supporting major customer sites, developing network based tools and porting compilers to a non-standard operating system.

  • 1984-20?? - Cray

    1984 to 1996  Cray Research
    1996 to 2000  SGI
    2000 to   Cray
    Surviving mergers and de-mergers whilst supporting Cray customers. Specializing in applications support, compilers, optimization techniques and user training. Also using networking experience; "if I can not get to the Cray the Cray is down".
