Who am I?
I've just retired as a Technical Support Analyst supporting various
Cray systems.
My work interests were -
- Compilers and program optimization techniques.
- Teaching (Optimization, MPP Programming and Korn shell).
- Web page development. I use these page as my sandpit to play in
so please let me know of any problems.
- Network support.
- Systems support.
My personal interests are -
- Astronomy (but not a practical observer any more).
I have written JavaScript for an astronomical ephemeris, you can find a
copy here and a simpler Sun and
moon rise/set page here.
- Preservation of the landscape and our historical buildings.
I'm a life member of the Friends of the Lake District, English Heritage
and the National Trust.
- Antique glass (but can not afford the vintage wines that should
go in them!).
My life history is -
- Born in Norfolk raised in Lincolnshire and Merseyside.
- 1966-79 - University of Manchester.
| 1966 to 1969 |
BSc Physics |
| 1969 to 1970 |
Msc Radio Astronomy at Jodrell Bank. |
| 1970 to 1973 |
Programming and preliminary scientific analysis for
an experiment on the Ariel 4 satellite.
Published Proceedings of the Royal Society A. 343,
227-240 (1975), Walsh, Hayes & Harrison. |
| 1973 to 1979 |
Regional Computer Centre (now Manchester Computing).
First doing user support then becoming a compiler specialist. |
- 1979-84 - Control Data Ltd.
| 1979 to 1980 |
Developing a PDP cross-assembler and APL code for a
new customer site.
|
| 1980 to 1984 |
Supporting major customer sites, developing network
based tools and porting compilers to a non-standard operating system.
|
-
1984-2009 - Cray
| 1984 to 1996 |
Cray Research |
| 1996 to 2000 |
SGI |
| 2000 to 2009 |
Cray |
|
Surviving mergers and de-mergers whilst supporting Cray customers.
Specializing in applications support, compilers, optimization
techniques and user training. Also using networking
experience to sort out problems the customer should have done if
they had worked weekends; "if I can not get to the Cray the Cray is
down".

Because of junk mail I don't want to put my e-mail address here, you can
work it out from the following rule -
- Look for a part of the URL of this page containing hayes, this is myself in
myself@blueyonder.co.uk
- If you found references to a freeserve mirror of these pages it's now died as I've
gone from dialup to cable, use the blueyonder address.
